Architect George Clarke says Sir David Attenborough is ‘royalty’ to him
This week TV Magazine gets to know what makes the Amazing Spaces' star tick
I try to do as little as possible on a Saturday.
But it depends whether I’ve got the kids [George has three children – Georgie, 14, Emilio, 12, and Iona, 10 – with ex-wife Catriona Drummond].
That would be a very different Saturday – we’d have lunch and then watch footie before going for a walk. Recently we’ve been going to Hampstead Heath, which is quite wild, and in the evening we’ll sit and watch Netflix together.
I moved into a new house in May and have been doing refurbishment work. Most of the houses I’ve lived in have been Edwardian or Victorian, but this is a 1968 contemporary London townhouse. I’ve gone for a classic 1960s Mad Men-style finish – beautiful rugs, fireplaces and 1960s artwork on the walls. I’ve also built a garden studio where I’ve got a wood-burning stove and all my architectural and design books. It’s my own little space.
To me, Sir David Attenborough is like royalty. I’ve got this wish that, in all the great things that my job brings, it could lead me to having a cup of tea with him. He opened the world up to me when I was a kid. From growing up in Sunderland and never really leaving the north east, I just thought: ‘What an incredible world there is out there.’
I’ve got a place in Ibiza and that feels like home from home. But I love to go to far-flung, adventurous places. I recently went to Cambodia on a camera trip – I’m a photography nut. I took loads of shots of Buddhist temples and all of the architecture there. I also like going to big, vast parts of America. I want to go to Montana with my son Emilio, as they do a lot of horse-riding there and he’s training to be a showjumper.
I tend to have a lot of mates in showbiz because of my job. The guy I spend most time with is Jimmy Doherty. We go on holiday with him and his family, and my kids go to his farm a lot. I knew Jamie Oliver before I started in television, as I did work for him on some of his restaurants. It was Jamie who introduced us, but me and Jimmy tend to see each other more.
The comment I get when I meet anybody new is: “You’re much taller than you look on telly.” I’m 6ft 3in and I think people think I’m around 5ft 10in. When I’m standing next to them, they’re surprised. My usual crap line back is: “Well, it depends how big your telly is.”
My favourite TV show is Peaky Blinders – it’s off the scale. I’m a box-set fan and when I’m travelling for work, it’s the one thing that allows me to switch off. My fascination goes back to the days of 24. I remember when it first came out, just sitting there and watching hours of it. I was mesmerised. The other box sets that really jump out are Breaking Bad and Vikings.
