Love Island will NOT feature gay and lesbian couples this year – despite bosses hinting they would

Previous reports suggested that the summertime hit show would mix things up this year by allowing gay, lesbian and trans people to apply, however bosses say they’ll be sticking to the regular format

LOVE Island will NOT include gay and lesbian couples this year, despite previous hints it would.

According The Daily Star the show will stick to its usual format as they “fear it wouldn’t work” if the minority of the gay and lesbian couples didn’t fancy each other and therefore didn’t get together.

A spokesman told the paper that producer Richard Cowles’ comments from last year remain the same.

He said: “The format doesn’t really allow it. If you’re familiar with the programme, it’s about coupling and re-coupling.”

And while some viewers have called for a same sex version of the show, an insider revealed there were “no plans” and added: “They don’t think gay contestants will work”.

This is a complete U-turn from yesterday when it was revealed that the show would have a variety of sexualities involved.

Bisexual contestants including Sophie Gradon and Katie Salmon have both previously featured on the show, however they weren't allowed to officially couple up with members of the same sex.

Instead they were told to pair up with a boy in a bid to win the £50,000 cash prize.

Despite this, the pair were seen hooking up on air regardless of their official partners.

The hit ITV2 reality show - on which sexy Brits have to pair up with each other in a Mallorcan villa - needs a whole new cohort of "vibrant singletons" for their summer series.

The series, which was won by Amber Davies and Kem Cetinay last year, is now looking for 2018 residents of the villa.
