Ryan Thomas reveals happiness at quitting Coronation Street and can’t wait to start filming for Neighbours

The 33-year-old soap actor is heading Down Under for a stint on the much loved Australian soap

RYAN Thomas has opened up about leaving Coronation Street – and why he’s glad he’s moving over to rival soap Neighbours.

The 33-year-old soap actor quit Corrie in June last year after sixteen years on the soap.

Now, after some time off and a stint in panto, is due to join Neighbours next year and will be heading to Australia.

Speaking to the Mirror ahead of his move, he said: “It is a massive responsibility having that show on your shoulders. So it is nice to be out of it [Corrie].”

Admitting that quitting his long-time role was a “risk”, he also admitted that he missed his previous on-screen family.

“I was in a bubble for 16 years. I love the place, it feels like home and I miss people there,” he said.

“But I really enjoy my time out of Corrie, getting to do new things.

“There’s a time to spread your wings and I felt like that was the time for me. I was ready.”

On his move to Ramsey Street, Ryan will now take on the role of loner Rafael Humphreys – a “handsome devil bad boy” character that’s set to ruffle some feathers.

Producers have promised the dark plot line will “see him confront a difficult chapter from his past.”

Talking of his return to soaps Ryan, who is dating ex Towie beauty Lucy Mecklenburgh, said: “I grew up watching Neighbours so to get the chance to join the cast is amazing.

“I was on holiday with my daughter when I got a phone call from my agent asking if I’d like to play this part.

“I spoke to the producer and found out more – it was very different from anything I’d played before – it was quite a deep, dark story, that really interested me.

“It’s a new challenge and I can’t wait to start filming.”

His first scenes will be screened early in the new year.
