EMMERDALE fans were left in tears tonight after Adam Barton confessed to Emma's murder to save his mum Moira Dingle.

In tonight's episode Moira rightly told the police she killed Emma but, when Adam found out what she had done, he insisted it was him who'd pushed her from the viaduct.

Moira's confession came after she discovered Adam was in custody for the murder.

She pleaded with the officers to believe her and begged: “I killed Emma Barton. It was me! Hello? Is anybody listening?”

When the officers told Adam what had happened he lied for his mum and said he committed the crime.

Adam said: “I took my car from the garage. I found Emma and I forced her into my car.

“I was going to  bring her here to confess but she got out. She ran to the viaduct and I followed her. She said she was going to end it. But she just stood there.

“Ranting about what scum I am. Even after she killed my dad. Tried to kill my mum. Shoot me. She was blaming everyone else.

“Then I grabbed her. I don’t know why. It was automatic. Maybe I wanted to save her?

“But then she started struggling and it got out of hand. I had to fight her off. If I didn’t it could have been me down there. You have to believe me. I never wanted any of this to happen. I knew she was dead. And I was scared.”

Adam, played by actor Adam Thomas, then insisted Moira only knew so much about the murder because he has confessed everything to her.

At the end of the episode, Adam broke down in tears when he was told he would be charged with murder.

Moira was devastated at what had happened and screamed with pain when she realised what her son had done to protect her.

Fans couldn't hold back their emotion at the scenes, which is the start of the soap's farewell to actor Adam who is leaving the ITV soap.

One tweeted: “Adam is literally breaking my heart after that confession  protecting his mumma.

A second commented: “Ohh Adam, you've just thrown your life away. Well done or being stupid?

Fans called for actress Natalie J Robb to get an award during the emotional scenes earlier this month when she revealed she was the killer.

Soap bosses used a series of flashbacks to play out the storyline, with Moira shoving Emma off the bridge after she blamed her for letting her daughter Holly overdose on heroin.
