A host of celebrities including Wayne Rooney, David Beckham and Jeremy Paxman signed up for the Ingenious schemes which offered tax breaks for investing in films such as Avatar.

But this summer a court ruled the schemes were not legitimate investments but a way of avoiding tax.

More than 1,400 investors were told they owed a total of £700million tax.

A pal said: “Dennis, like lots of other people was badly advised. He thought he was investing in films, he didn’t do it as a tax dodge.
