What is Howards End about?

Howards End is one of the finest novels of the 20th century - so BBC viewers should count themselves lucky they're getting a brand new TV adaptation.

The drama is based on EM Forster’s 1910 novel about the Wilcox family’s rollercoaster friendship with two modern sisters, Margaret and Helen Schlegel.

Set just after the turn of the 20th century, Howards End is a tale of three families - the intellectual idealists Schlegel family, the working class Basts and the wealthy Wilcoxes.

Schlegel sisters Meg and Helen are shown exploring the lives of people above and below their class - while older sister Meg is pursued by the corporate raider, and widower, Henry Wilcox.

Looking across the social spectrum at a time of huge change, the drama illustrates how class divisions define people's lives no matter what choices they make.
