WHAT can't you miss on TV tonight? Our guide to the must-see shows...
NEW! Howards End, 9pm, BBC One
The BBC’s latest period drama takes us to early 20th-century London, where Margaret ‘Meg’ Schlegel (Hayley Atwell, right) is living with her sister Helen and brother Tibby.
But as we soon learn, the family are fortunate enough that the tiniest of issues becomes a huge deal… Episode one introduces us to the characters, including Aunt Juley (Tracey Ullman), but it’s the Schlegels’ relationship with businessman Mr Wilcox (Matthew Macfadyen, left) and his family – who live in their beloved house in the country, Howards End – that’s most explored.
Based on EM Forster’s novel, the attention to detail is exquisite, with horse-drawn carriages and fabulous fashions, and while tonight’s opener is a little uneventful, it sets up plenty of intrigue for the remaining three episodes.
Blue Planet II, 8pm, BBC One
Expect stunning scenes that will make you feel like you’re right in the middle of Finding Nemo as we learn about technicolour coral reefs.
But it’s not just the feast for our eyes that makes this show so epic, it’s also the stories – tonight’s pearls include the tale of a grouper fish and an octopus who use sign language to help each other find lunch. Both beautiful and captivating.
NEW! Alan Shearer: Dementia, Football and Me, 10.30pm, BBC One
England legend Alan Shearer (above) investigates whether heading a football causes brain damage.
He undergoes scientific tests, talks to ex-footballers and meets families convinced that heading has caused their loved on
es’ dementia – and even death. Shearer deserves great credit for his unflinching search for answers.
NEW! Elton John: The Nation’s Favourite Song, 9pm, ITV
“It’s not every day you get to meet one of the campest men in Britain,” says David Walliams.
“For Elton John, that day has come.” And so David begins a revealing interview with his pal and delivers a countdown of Elton’s (above) most-loved tunes. Added to input from peers such as Ed Sheeran, Sting and Billy Joel, we’re reminded how enjoyable Elton’s career is.
