WHAT can't you miss on TV tonight? Our guide to the must-see shows...
NEW! The A Word 9pm, BBC One
Buzzcocks’ Everybody’s Happy Nowadays may be playing on seven-year-old Joe’s headphones as he goes on one of his strolls through the Lake District, but not everyone is smiling in the Hughes household.
As we join series two of this drama, Joe (the wonderfully expressive Max Vento, centre) is acknowledging his autism out loud, much to the surprise of parents Alison and Paul.
In the two years that have passed, plenty has changed: Alison (Morven Christie, left) is no longer in denial and is instead supporting Joe; dad Paul (Lee Ingleby, right), though, is going in the other direction.
Once again, much of the humour comes from cantankerous grandpa Maurice (Christopher Eccleston) and his deadpan son Eddie (Greg McHugh), but all round this feels a less earnest return.
NEW! Motherland, 10pm, BBC Two
Frazzled mum Julia (Anna Maxwell Martin, left) returns, as last year’s comedy pilot justifiably gets a series.
She’s peer-pressured into throwing a lavish kids’ party and chaos ensues, with a racist entertainer, crisps served in a sick bowl and inappropriate things being done to carrots.
Julia’s so manic that she’s exhausting to watch, but Diane Morgan (right) as Liz has some cracking lines.
NEW! Masterchef: The Professionals, 8pm, BBC TWO
Six chefs enter the kitchen full of hope – and are confronted by Marcus Wareing,Gregg Wallace and Monica Galetti (l-r) and a duck carcass.
For most of them, panic sets in and they end up like the undercooked meat they serve up – bright pink.
Still, the signature dish is a big improvement and includes an incredible-looking chocolate recipe.
NEW! The Secret life of 4 Year Olds, 8pm, Channel 4
There’s a new group of pre-schoolers in the classroom, but expect similar touching and laugh-out-loud moments as in the first series.
Standout star tonight is Vinnie (above), a little boy who loves winning so much that he feeds his rival team wrong answers during a quiz – when asked what animal bacon comes from, he yells “crocodiles”, hoping they’ll take the bait.
