CORONATION Street fans had their minds blown by two of its darkest episodes ever tonight - and took to the web to praise the performances of Connor McIntyre, Ian Kelsey and Oliver Farnworth.

Tonight's two killings, which viewers compared to scenes from a horror flick, saw Pat Phelan finally kill his prisoner Andy Carver - after lying to him that he'd be set free, so that he would murder his associate Vinny for him.

After being taken to a dilapidated paper factory, a broken Andy shot Vinny - before turning the gun on his captor.

But this was a mistake, and Andy was soon taking a bullet from Phelan himself - bringing the body count to two.

Phelan had been rejected by his daughter Nicola earlier in the episode, after she discovered he had actually raped her mum - and it was clear that it was this that pushed him over the edge.

Fans were left open-mouthed by the convincing performances, particularly by McIntyre who plays the murderous psycho Phelan.

They took to Twitter in their droves to praise the ITV soap for its tour de force of great dramatic writing, acting and directing.

And they got an extra special treat after the double episode too as Corrie released a special behind-the-scenes video showing just how the tense killings were filmed.

Talking about why he thinks his character finally decided to kill, McIntyre said: "Phelan has been promising the world to Andy but he is two, three steps ahead.

"The Vinny problem has evaporated and it was in that moment that Phelan realised how easy it is to solve a problem.

"As soon as he got the gun off Andy, he registered, ‘two birds, one stone.’

"He saw that opportunity and he is the architect of his own downfall. And now Nicola’s gone, that was a catalyst as well, he’s really at a dangerous moment," he added.
