LAST EVER EPISODE! Inspector George Gently, 8.30pm, BBC One
As a clue to the content of this episode – which is, we’re sad to say, the show’s swansong – it was due to be shown around the time of the General Election but was deemed too political.
Bacchus and Coles (no matter what happens next, a spin-off series featuring them could be great) are investigating a murder on a picket line, where a construction firm are trying to replace union workers with temporary labour.
Coles thinks the killing may have been an attempt to discredit the unions, but Bacchus warns her that “lefties are dangerous” – though he also gets “Nijinsky” confused with “Trotsky”, so it’s hard to take him too seriously.
Gently (Martin Shaw, right) oversees them, but he’s a couple of weeks from retirement, haunted by new information about his wife’s death and secretly investigating a very political murder.
It’s never rushed as it slowly and steadily builds to an intense finale, where it becomes clear that their cases are linked and there are dark, powerful forces involved. A very fitting end.
NEW! Nigella: At My Table 8.30pm, BBC Two
We’d never thought of using a tea strainer in the egg-poaching process before, but it’s one of Nigella Lawson’s suggestions as she glides into the kitchen in this new series that celebrates simple home cooking.
Highlights tonight include “emergency brownies” (although we’d want more than two) – which Nigella makes in her dressing gown for some reason – and chicken-and-pea traybake.
NEW! A Very Royal Wedding, 9pm, ITV
Nope, it’s not Harry and Meghan’s (yet), but an early celebration of the Queen and Prince Philip’s 70th wedding anniversary – the big day’s actually in November but ITV are getting the party started.
Alexander Armstrong (above) meets those who remember the day, re-creates the 9ft-tall cake and shares
Her Majesty’s home-video clips.

The ever-amiable Warwick Davis (above) has proved to be multi-talented – not only is he a terrific actor, but he’s not too bad at presenting quiz shows either.
Today sees the return of this daily brainteaser, which here welcomes York-based team Never Mind The Pollocks, but how many of the Top 10 lists can they complete in a bid to win big?
