EastEnders’ Shane Richie hints Alfie Moon was originally going to be Peggy Mitchell’s love interest
SHANE Richie has hinted that his character Alfie Moon was originally going to be Peggy Mitchell’s love interest.
The actor – who ended up with Kat – shared a picture of himself alongside actress Barbara Windsor and teased a storyline that never came to be.
He wrote: “A storyline on Easties back in 2002 was talked about but never came to screen, would've changed everything, but you don't wanna know ! (sic).”
Not surprisingly the tweet got his fans talking and they started speculating about the potential storyline.
One person wrote: “Alfie, in his determination to be vic landlord, marries Peggy #margaretmoon.”
While a second joked: “Wasn’t it that Peggy and Alfie had an affair and that Alfie was gonna be Peggy’s toyboy😂😂😂.”
And another commented: “You and the Duchess would have made a great couple #Pegfie.”
Others thought that rather than being romantically involved, Peggy was in fact Alfie’s long lost mum.
''Alfie was Peggy's long lost son. #ThinkingOutLoud.,” wrote one.
Someone else asked: “Peggy was Alfie’s mum?”
Alfie Moon, played by Shane, first appeared on EastEnders in November 2002 and left on Christmas Day in 2005.
He returned in 2010 alongside on screen wife Kat, Jessie Wallace, and left five years later before appeared in their spin off Kat & Alfie: Redwater.
The series, which turned out to be a flop, concluded back in June and fans were left wondering whether Albert Square's golden couple had managed to survive.
Speaking to The Sun, he said: "Thankfully, Kat and Alfie are not dead. That's as much as I know."
And the 53-year-old admitted he’d jump at the chance to return to the soap because he loved working there so much.
He said: "Trust me, if I get the phone call from EastEnders . . . I loved being there. I've got a lot of friends that are still there.
"If I got the phone call to come back, I'd love the idea.
"Every time, you get actors, they always say, 'Never say never'. And I've watched and I've gone, 'Shut up, never say never!' Because all these actors make out it's their decision whether they go back or not, and it's b******s. It's never their decision."
