Calum Best reveals his dad George left him penniless and in debt as he’s forced to hit back at cruel trolls
CALUM Best has revealed his dad George left him in debt when he died.
The 36-year-old took to Instagram today to set the record straight about his background and speculation that he is a ‘spoilt rich boy’ – revealing he was in fact left with nothing.
Footballer George died age 59, from complications due to alcoholism in 2005 when Calum was just 24.
But while he was one of the greatest footie stars of his generation, Calum – who has made a name for himself through reality TV – says his dad went bankrupt twice and he has been forced to work to make his money.
And today, the star had enough of receiving abuse and decided to put the record straight in a passionate post.
He wrote: “Feel this was needed today just to put my stamp on it. Literally for as long as I can remember the assumption, mainly dudes I may add, is that I come from money.
“I will say first my life is deffo blessed and I have a name that if done right can help make a living, saying that it opens a door but I have to it keep it open with relentless hardwork and proving myself in a shadow larger than life.”
He continued: “My dad was bankrupt twice, I wasn’t left with a penny, was actually left with debt.
“So any dudes thinking I am a spoilt rich boy do you research, I f***ing graft hard to keep and earn respect and earn a living to pay for myself and my mother where I can.
“Not coming from adversity? Try coming back to being on top after you question your life when your dad dies from alcoholism at 24 and your alone with no other family then tell me about my spoiled life.
“Small minds as f***. Anyway I’m not top as I have made my life good. Peace and love.”
Calum first made a name for himself in 2006 when he took part in ITV’s Celebrity Love Island.
Since then he has gone on to appear in a number of TV shows including Celebrity Big Brother, which he did alongside his model mum Angie Best. He has also recently starred in Celebs Go Dating.
Calum previously revealed in an episode of In Therapy that he went into a downward spiral after his dad's death.
He said: “There was a time right after I lost my old man from 24 to 27 where I drank every day and I did drugs and slept around and I built a horrible reputation for myself.
“I didn’t know my ass from my elbow and I was going here, there and everywhere with no shame or morals.
"I had years of grief. Constant f***ing grief.
“I would walk down the street staring at the floor because I didn’t want people to say ‘there’s that pr*** Calum Best’.”
