Doctor Foster star Suranne Jones gives biggest hint yet that hit BBC show will return for third series
The actress said the show's writer and creator Mike Bartlett has penned a continuation for character Dr Gemma Foster's ongoing love-life saga
DOCTOR Foster star Suranne Jones has dropped the biggest hint yet that there will be a third series of the biggest drama on TV.
The actress revealed she already knows the plotline for another instalment of the psychological thriller ahead of its Tuesday night finale.
Suranne, 39, told how the show’s writer and creator Mike Bartlett rang her to discuss it.
But if another series gets the green light, fans of the BBC drama will have to wait at least two years to see it on screen.
She said: “I’m busy next year. I’m in a play and then I go off with Sally Wainwright to the Yorkshire moors to go and film Gentleman Jack so I’m not actually available until January 2019.”
Yesterday the actress was snapped stepping out for an interview at BBC Radio 2.
The talented actress, 38 - wearing a blue pin-striped jacket and black jeans - beamed for snappers while arriving at the London BBC office ahead of the series two finale of her hit drama.
Removing her tortoiseshell sunglasses, former Corrie star Suranne looked relaxed - and prepared to give as few details as possible to listeners so as not to spoil the final episode.
Grinning from ear to ear, she didn't look in the least bit like Gemma Foster, the lead character in the BBC series - who fans reckon could kill her own son in the series climax on Tuesday.
While campaigners have slammed the show for its portrayal of heavy boozing as a crutch for stress, Suranne looked like someone without a care in the world - despite the turbulent love triangle in her past.
This week Suranne opened up on how she felt when she found out she'd be filming sex scenes for Doctor Foster just after giving birth in 2016.
She told The Sun: “Of course it isn’t thrilling to read sex scenes when you’ve just had a baby and you’re going back to work six months after…
“But it’s important. I kept saying to Mike: ‘Maybe Gemma has just put on weight. Could we reference that?’”
But she defended the amount of sex that's been shown in the show, particularly the controversial scene which saw Gemma seduce her evil ex Simon.
She said: "Without [the sex scene], it wouldn’t have been as powerful.
“I think any actor would say to you that gratuitous sex is something you don’t want to be involved in.
"Why would you want to do that? I’ve read scripts where I’ve thought: ‘We didn’t need to see that’."
She added: "It’s sometimes awkward to watch. I think you know when it’s not really part of the story because you go [cringes]: ‘Turn it off!’
"If it’s part of the story, you’re in it. I’m there with them."
Doctor Foster is set to conclude at 9pm on BBC One this Tuesday, with fans waiting to find out if Gemma will kill Simon - and whether James really is who he says he is.
