As Dr Foster ends, we’ve still got 10 questions that NEED answers
IT’S just what the doctor ordered — a TV drama that has had viewers gripped right up until its nail-biting conclusion.
Doctor Foster, starring Suranne Jones as wronged ex-wife Gemma and Bertie Carvel as her devious former husband Simon, reaches its climax on Tuesday night.
And the BBC drama has had more twists and turns than a roller coaster, so anything could happen.
Last week’s episode saw Gemma driving at speed towards her ex. Will she finish him off? And what is on the cards for the rest of the cast?
Here, we pose the ten burning questions the finale must answer.
Does Gemma run Simon over?
EARLY on Simon insisted the only way he would be leaving Parminster is in a coffin, so was he predicting his early death?
The final scene in last week’s episode saw an enraged Gemma veering towards her ex-husband, but will she go through with it?
It seems unlikely, not least because of how murdering her son’s dad would affect her beloved Tom (Tom Taylor).
Will she hit Simon then use her medical expertise to save him, or see sense and slam on the brakes?
What did Simon do on her phone?
OUTSIDE his now empty home, where Gemma had come to gloat, we saw Simon grab her phone.
He claimed he used it to find out where Tom was staying but it looked an awful lot like he was sending a message. If so, who was it to and what did it say?
Simon knows the best way to hurt Gemma is through Tom. Has he texted him something so hurtful that it will drive a permanent wedge between mother and son?
Could he be telling Tom that she is trying to kill his dad in order to destroy his ex-wife?
What's the deal with Dr Sian?
THE mysterious medic was introduced as an irritating goody two-shoes before it was revealed she was an old university friend of Simon’s.
But she has become an unlikely ally for Gemma and in last week’s episode we saw her help lure Kate (Jodie Comer) into a showdown at a hotel.
But have Sian’s loyalties really switched or will she prove to be a thorn in Gemma’s side once more?
Writer Mike Bartlett hinted: “Sian seems to know more about Gemma than one might expect.”
Have we seen the last of James?
SOMETHING seems off with Gemma’s lover, James (Prasanna Puwanarajah).
The teacher, inset, has put up with her crazy behaviour and was dragged to the wedding party of her ex-husband yet still goes back for more.
James didn’t make an appearance last week but we doubt we’ve seen the last of him.
Could he be another of Simon’s spies, or will Gemma get her happy ending?
What will happen to their son Tom?
POOR Tom is not in a good way – and who can blame him with parents like his?
Gemma believes that if she can get Simon to leave town, Tom will be able to return to his school and life will get back to normal.
Given that Tom was last seen sobbing in the bath, having assaulted his friend Isobel and alienated best buddy Max, it seems unlikely that a happy ever after is on the cards.
Gemma and Simon are so intent on destroying each other that they are blind to the damage it is doing to Tom. Will he be pushed to the edge?
What did Simon tell Tom?
GEMMA and Tom seemed to have a close relationship, but that all changed when Simon moved back to Parminster.
Suddenly, Tom was intent on living with his dad and it became clear Simon had told him something about Gemma that he did not like.
She sneered: “You told him something and now he won’t even look at me.” So what did Simon say?
Perhaps he revealed that Gemma pretended to kill Tom in order to get back at him for his affair in the first series.
That’s enough to mess up any kid.
Will Gemma and Kate join forces?
LAST week Kate finally came to her senses about her awful husband.
We saw Kate leaving town with her parents and daughter but in this show, no one ever leaves without committing to revenge.
Could we see Kate return, teaming up with Gemma to destroy Simon once and for all?
Or will Kate realise that Gemma’s final attempts to discredit Simon – which included the rather desperate plea that “Thai food is our food”, ignoring that millions of other people like Thai food too – is actually obsessive madness?
Could the exes end up together?
GEMMA and Simon are obsessed with each other.
He had everything but could not leave his ex alone.
She only needed to rise above his games to maintain her dignity and relationship with Tom – yet she couldn’t.
Their furious hate sex showed that the line between loathing and lust is blurred for them.
Simon and Gemma have each behaved badly and madly.
In this way at least, they are a match made in heaven.
Will they end up together because no one else in their right minds would have them?
What about acid and syringes?
WILL the four syringes from the foreboding scene of the first episode crop up in the finale?
If you think this means there will be a violent end, you could be right.
Writer Bartlett has said his drama is loosely based on the Greek tale of Medea, a hate-filled wife who murders her own children, her husband’s mistress and the mistress’s father as revenge for her husband’s infidelity.
Could it be that things aren’t looking good for Kate, her dad Chris (Neil Stukes) or poor Tom.
Will there be a third series?
SURANNE has hinted that another series could happen if Bartlett “comes up with another story”.
Yet he has said: “Depending on what happens at the end of series two, a third might not be possible.”
Does that mean he’ll be leaving the door open?
Suranne insists the finale will provide a “good, solid ending” but that doesn’t mean the BBC won’t want to bring back their mega hit.
Will Bartlett leave the odd loose end – just in case?
