RUSSELL Brand had Lorraine Kelly and viewers in stitches this morning after having a meltdown over a plastic croissant.

The stand-up comedian and new dad was on the show to talk about his recovery and being a new father when the choice of fake breakfast proved too much for him.

Asked whether he wanted to remain on the show through the final segment, he decided to stay.

He said: "Where am I going to go at this hour of the day? Just grab me a blanket and I'll have a croissant."

But as he grabbed one Lorraine told him not to and revealed some telly trickery meant that the snack was actually plastic.

"No, no, no don't, they're plastic," she shrieked with laughter as Russell tried to eat one.

"It's delicious," he said as he bit down on the plastic breakfast.

Then it all took a surreal turn with him staring directly at the camera and pleading for help.

"Help me, is anything real?" he said.

"Can we even trust Lorraine? What is this Lorraine? We look to you. Are you even Scottish?"

While Lorraine broke into laughter again, viewers joined her, delighted at the bizarre scenes that perked up their Friday morning.

"Watching Russell Brand on #Lorraine is such a good way to wake up," wrote one viewer adding: "@rustyrockets give him his own chat show."

Another said: "'ITVLorraine love [Russell Brand] so much absolutely has me in stitches."
