CORONATION Street star Simon Gregson has paid a heartfelt tribute to the NHS after his wife’s life was saved by a hero doctor.
Mum-of-three Emma Gleave, 34, was rushed to hospital with a mystery illness and was said to be just hours from death over the weekend.
But staff shortages meant there was no doctor on call to treat her – until a kind-hearted consultant made a midnight dash to perform life-saving surgery.
It was the latest close shave for the Steve McDonald actor’s wife, who previously revealed she has had suffered 11 miscarriages.
Simon, 42, tweeted: “So three times the wonderful doctors of the NHS have saved my wife’s life even when so over worked and at breaking point??”
how the medical drama unfolded on Friday night as she was rushed to Wythenshawe Hospital in Manchester.
She says she desperately needed a scan but staff shortages meant she faced an agonising wait and even potential death.
She wrote: “I usually wouldn’t do this but I was a couple of hours away from not being here to write this.
“I owe my life to Dr Arora who travelled to scan me at midnight and preformed life-saving surgery on me through the night.
“Our NHS is amazing!!!!! Everyone here does the work of 10 people on their own! Stop the cuts.... the NHS are the backbone of our country.”
Fans and co-stars were quick to offer their best wishes to the pair following the mystery medical emergency.
Corrie star Beverley Callard, 60, who plays Simon’s on-screen mum Liz McDonald, said: “The NHS are truly fantastic! X”
A fan added: “Great hospital and staff, saved my life too. Can’t ever repay them.”
Simon and brunette Emma have been married since 2010 and are parents to three boys, Alfie, nine, Harry, seven, and one-year-old Teddy.
They previously revealed Teddy was a twin but they lost one baby early in the pregnancy.
Comedian Ted Robbins previously revealed he owes his life to staff at Wythenshawe Hospital after he collapsed on stage.
The dad-of-two, 62, was performing in the Peter Kay’s Phoenix Nights at Manchester Arena in January 2015 when he suffered a cardiac arrest.
He later returned to the hospital for an emotional reunion with the medics who helped pull him back from the brink of death.
A spokesman for Wythenshawe Hospital said they are unable to comment on individuals.
