Starting Monday’s show an amused Holly asked Phil if he was OK after he tried to gobble the sweet treat down.

He told her his fingers were sticky before he proceeded to dip them in her glass of water to clean them.

Pretending to be outraged Holly then picked up the last bit of his doughnut and finished it off while giggling.

The joking around didn’t stop there though, as they played a clip of their new dog snoring before panning to the pup playing with his stuffed toy.

Holly remarked: “The silver fox has taken a bit of a battering. It’s definitely flatter than the last time I saw it.”

The presenters then dissolved into hysterics before trying to continue with the show.

It didn’t go according to plan though as Holly struggled to read what was coming up next and was forced to read it a couple of times.

Last week it was revealed that the This Morning puppy had been called Digby.

The adorable 12-week-old goldador - a Labrador and Golden Retriever cross - joined the show's family last Monday as a replacement for the programme's resident guide dog Luna, who will now continue her training as an assistant for the disabled elsewhere, and viewers chipped in via Twitter to choose the fluff ball's name.

Digby was introduced to fans earlier on in the episode when Phillip brought the chunky canine - who is the first male to work on the show - from his backstage pen.

The silver fox said: "He's bigger than I thought he was going to me.”

Holly added: "Oh my goodness, look at your big paws. You're going to get so big. Our first boy! I think he's really calm. He's quite chilled."

As the 55-year-old presenter struggled to hold him, he explained: "He's a 12-week-old Labrador-Retriever cross. He's going to have a very important job when he grows up. His mum is a Golden Retriever and his dad is a Labrador.

"He's from the charity Goods For Good - they've trained dogs to assist people in need, such as disabled people and autistic children.

"He could also work in a hospital to help people with their recovery. He's the first male puppy with a purpose we've had on 'This Morning'."

This is the third resident dog the show has had, as throughout the last series they Luna – a Labradoodle – and the year before that they had her half-sister Clover.
