Justin Bieber fans are convinced new single Friends is about ex-girlfriend Selena Gomez – as he releases first music since Despacito
JUSTIN Bieber's brand new song is an epic post-split anthem which means, inevitably, that it has fans speculating the lyrics could be directed towards ex-girlfriend Selena Gomez.
The 23-year-old has whipped social media into a frenzy with new track 'Friends', which is a message to an unnamed lover pleading for them to remain on good terms despite ending a relationship.
Although Biebs doesn't name-check the subject of his song, that hasn't stopped curious fans taking to Twitter to speculate the track is about his former love, Selena.
Fuelling the chat is the fact Selena is Justin's most-famous and only long-term partner.
The track contains lyrics alluding to a romance not ending in the best way and wanting an update on the mystery girl's family.
Justin sings: "I was wondering about your mama, did she get that job she wanted? Sold that car that gave her problems? I'm just curious about her, honest."
He also sings that he's not looking to re-kindle the romance, he just wants to be friends.
"Girl, you're wondering why I've been calling, like I've got ulterior motives. No, we didn't end this so good, but you know we had something so good."
While Justin - whose remix of Spanglish hit 'Despacito' was recently named the most-streamed song of all time - didn't mention Selena's name and has yet to confirm the subject of the track, it hasn't stopped his Beliebers gushing about what they believe to be the meaning of the song.
One tweeted: "This song proves how much Justin loves Selena #truelove, even if they are just #friends."
Another said: "Yes, you can still be friends with Selena Gomez, doesn't have to end and if ends you can be friends again."
Many more also linked the track with Selena.
However, others shunned the idea Justin would still be singing about Selena after all these years, and pointed out not all the lyrics seemed to reference her.
At one stage in the song, Justin sings: "Wondering if you got a body to hold you tight since I left."
But it's widely known that Selena is blissfully happy with musician The Weeknd.
One fan tweeted: "Not every song that is remotely romantic that is by Justin is about Selena!"
Another said: "Repeat after me: everything Justin does is not about Selena or dedicated to her!"
A third added: "Can people stop assuming Justin's new song is about Selena, they have both moved on, why can't you do the same!"
Justin, 23, and Selena, 25, were first linked back in December 2010 and went public with their romance the following February, attending the Vanity Fair Oscars party together.
They reportedly split that November before getting back together, only to split again a few months later.
Their on-off romance continued until 2014.
Selena has since moved on to find love with The Weeknd, while Justin has been linked to stars including Hailey Baldwin, Hailee Steinfeld and Sofia Richie.
Despite splitting, the ex couple have remained amicable, offering words of support and compliments to each other in various interviews over the years.
Selena told magazine in 2015: "I'll forever support him and love him in a way that ... We grew up together. I think people want it to be different."
