Ultimate 80's kid (1982)

Quickly making a mark on the club scene of New York, Madonna released her debut album and hit the road.

Embracing bold and eye-catching colours, Madonna made sure that she wouldn't be easily forgotten, and in the two years that followed she achieved international acclaim for her singles including Holiday, and Lucky Star.

She also embraced elements of her sexuality in a way that had never been seen before in a female pop star - and as a result, a legend was born.

Teen Bride at the first VMAs (1984)

Becoming one of the first attendees ever at the MTV Video Music Awards, Madonna knew quickly to leave a lasting impression.

Wearing a wedding dress-inspired outfit, Madonna added her own flare to the ensemble by dropping her neck in pearls, crosses and chains, wore elbow-high fingerless gloves and wore elements similar to that of a naughty negligee.

The then 25-year-old star certainly turned heads in the get up - especially as during this time she was promoting her "Like a Virgin" album, which - just like the outfit - perfectly merged the innocent with the raunchy.

Desperately Seeking Susan (1985)

Starring alongside Rosanna Arquette, Madonna made her major film debut in 1985 comedy drama, Desperately Seeking Susan.

In the film she plays Susan Thomas, the bohemian woman that a young woman becomes enamoured by after reading about her escapades through personal ads in a New York newspaper.

Her quirky style combined masculine elements of fashion with the feminine, including fishnet gloves, loose-fitting trouser and corseted tops, and alerted the world to how big her potential could really be.

The cone bra (1990)

The iconic outfit to end all iconic outfits, Madonna appeared on tour in a cone bra corset by designer Jean-Paul Gaultier.

Throughout the Blonde Ambition phase of her career, Madonna would frequently wear lingerie as outerwear in a series of risque and bold fashion statements.

While all of them were sexy and outstanding, it's the cone bra she will perhaps forever be remembered for.

Marie Antoinette at the VMAs (1990)

If you can't be fashion forward, be fashion reflective, and Madonna looked all the way back to the French Revolution for her look at the 1990 VMAs.

Performing Vogue, Madonna channelled the Queen of luxury in Marie Antoinette for her performance - complete with the bouffant wig and extravagant corsetted dress.

Around the time, she was becoming known for her lingerie outfits - so reminding her fans to continue to expect the unexpected, she went as far away from that type she could get.

The Marilyn Monroe (1985 - 1991)

Cementing her reputation for having a love of old fashion icons, Madonna adopted her next style trend from the late, great actress, Marilyn Monroe.

During this period, which started in the mid-80s and carried through to the 90s, she frequently appeared as the spitting image of the tragic idol, including donning a pink dress and tight blonde curls for her Material Girl video, and during the 1991 awards season when she attended the Oscars alongside Michael Jackson.

Adorned around her neck and wrists was jewellery adorned in Harry Winston diamonds - estimated to be worth a staggering £17million.

Hung Up at the Europe Music Awards

After going through a jeans phase thanks to her Ray of Light album amongst a series of other statements, Madonna hit the headlines once again when she clad herself in leather and leotards for her Hung Up performance at the European Music Awards.

A similar outfit was seen in the music video for the song, which sampled Gimme Gimme Gimme by ABBA, and left people in shock as she showed off her incredible flexibility and killer figure thanks to being a devoted pilates class attendee.

The Superbowl half-time show (2012)

Landing herself as the headliner of the annual Superbowl's halftime show, Madonna pulled out all the stops to make sure this was one to be remembered.

Taking reference points from historical legends - and particularly the fashion of Ancient Rome - Madonna emerged as a warrior in knee high leather boots and prepared for battle with whoever stood in her way.

Musicians that joined her on stage for her medley extravaganza included Nicki Minaj, LMFAO and MIA, and drew in 114 international viewers - which was more than the football game itself did.

The GLAAD Awards (2013)

Attending the GLAAD award ceremony in New York in 2013, Madonna did what she does best - and made a statement with her choice of outfit.

The icon arrived dressed as a boy scout - in a deliberate dig at the youth organisation's decision to ban gay people from becoming members and calling for them to reconsider.

During her speech ahead of presenting Anderson Cooper with the Vito Russo award, she told the crowd: "I wanted to be a boy scout but they wouldn't let me join. I think they should change their stupid rules, don't you?"
