Emmerdale star Adam Thomas claims the soap pays the same as Tesco in cheeky jibe
FORMER Emmerdale star Adam Thomas has hinted at money troubles and mocked the soap's pitiful paychecks after quitting when bosses tried to block a £100,000 panto role.
The actor and I'm a Celebrity contestant, 28, put himself in the running for the tightest man in showbiz as he compared his fee for playing Adam Barton on the ITV show to a supermarket worker's salary.
He wrote in an online post: "The only time I don't mind paying for stuff is when [I] am p***ed. Any other time I have suicidal thoughts."
When a pal said: "Sounds like you work at Tesco, not Emmerdale", Adam joked on Facebook: "Haha wages are probably not far off to be honest."
The Sun revealed in May that Adam quit Emmerdale after eight years when bosses tried to prevent him from taking on a lucrative stage role.
Telly insiders said soap chiefs were fuming after giving him time off to appear on I'm a Celeb last year, and issued him an ultimatum.
Adam was confirmed for the lead role in Newcastle's Jack and the Beanstalk panto last month. He will appear alongside fellow soap veteran Denise Welch, 59.
Adam opened up about his skimpy bank balance just days after returning from his wild Ibiza stag do ahead of his wedding to dance teacher Caroline Daly, the mother of his two-year-old son Teddy, on August 27.
He partied alongside his twin, Love Island scar Scott Thomas, older brother and Coronation Street actor Ryan Thomas, 33, plus his Emmerdale co-stars Danny Miller, 26, and Kelvin Fletcher, 33.
He fumed on Twitter at the time: "Doesn't make it easy for the nxt t**t".
Adam is set to continue working on Emmerdale until the end of the year and is expected to bow out early in 2018.
Emmerdale producer Iain MacLeod promised they would "prepare a huge exit story" for him.
