MTV VMAs 2017 winners and losers – Kendrick Lamar wins six at star-studded event

It was an explosive night at the MTV VMAs in California - with Kendrick Lamar winning big

THE MTV VMAs took on a political tone this year with artists using their time on stage to speak out against social injustices.

But who won what, who were the nominees and who bagged the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard award? Here's the scoop.

What are the MTV 2017 VMAs and where did the ceremony take place?

The MTV VMAs is an annual event that honours the performers and creatives behind the best music videos of the past year.

The 2017 VMAs were held on August 27 and broadcast live from The Forum in California.

Music videos released between 25 June 2016 and 23 June 2017 are eligible for the nominations list.

The categories include Video Of The Year, Artist Of The Year, Best New Artist, Best Collaboration, Best Pop, Best Hip Hop, Best Dance, Best Rock, Best Fight Against The System, Best Cinematography, Best Direction, Best Visual Effects, Best Editing and Best Choreography.

Who was nominated for this year's MTV VMAs and who won?

Kendrick Lamar lead the pack with an impressive eight nominations, including Video of the Year and Best Hip Hop. He was closely followed by pop superstar Katy Perry who has racked up five nominations including Best Pop and Best Visual Effects for comeback track, Chained To The Rhythm.

Harry Styles scored two nominations for his first solo single, Sign Of The Times, with both Best Visual Effects and Best Pop.

Who is hosting the 2017 MTV VMAs and is it broadcast in the UK?

Katy Perry hosted the show, throwing in multiple outfit changes during the night.

DJ Khaled hosted in 2016 and Kelly Osbourne took on presenting duties in 2015.

Special guests at the 2017 including Alicia Keys, Rita Ora, Kim Kardashian and Drake introduced performers and announced the winners.

The ceremony will be broadcast on MTV live on 27 August 2017.

What are some of the most famous VMA moments?

Highlights of previous VMA ceremonies include Britney Spears donning a giant yellow python for her 2001 performance of I'm A Slave 4 U.

Two years later and Britney grabbed headlines yet again with her onstage smooch with Madonna.

Kanye West stormed the VMA stage in 2009 and interrupted Taylor Swift's acceptance speech, claiming that Beyonce was a more deserving recipient of the Video Of The Year award.

The controversial moment led to public backlash against the rapper but the pair seemingly made amends when Taylor presented Kanye with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award in 2015, where he announced plans to run as president in 2020.

More recently, Beyonce announced her first pregnancy during her 2011 VMA performance.

While performing Love On Top, the singer said "I want you to feel the love that's growing inside of me," before unbuttoning her sparkly Dolce & Gabbana jacket and caressing her stomach.

The reveal saw a record-breaking average of 8,868 tweets per second as fans flocked to celebrate Beyonce's news.
