Our film critic recruits his boy Jasper, 12, to review Monster Island
Jasper 'quite enjoyed' the film – especially the twerking frogs – but felt the animation wasn't realistic
Monster Island
(PG) 80mins
A DAD has to get a return on his investment so I recruited JASPER EAST, aged 12, to do this review.
It’s all a bit stream-of-consciousness . . .
JASPER: It’s about a boy who goes to this secondary school and he bumps into a bully who’s beating up his friend.
He goes to try and stop him and ends up getting bullied himself.
He makes a deal with the bully where he has to do his science project for him, bringing a demon frog to life!
He uses too much electricity and explodes the frog on the bully.
Some mysterious thing from his past turns him into a monster – his dad has been holding it as a secret for years – it’s why their mum left.
Then his dad gives him a map to Monster Island and it gets really cool!

JAMIE: He says he “quite enjoyed it” but the animation didn’t look very realistic in the same way it does in Monsters Inc (ha!).
What he is saying – and I agree – is that this is Coraline-esque in style but never quite pulls it off.
It all looks a bit cheap and half-baked.
He loved the twerking frogs and said it would be good for kids to watch during the holidays.
So there you have it. The boy has spoken.
I thought it was good, not particularly great. But you won’t feel cheated if you go to see it.
