Teen Mom star Megan Salmon-Ferrari took to motherhood like a ‘duck to water’
The 19-year-old reckons having two children is a breeze
We all know the negative stereotype facing teenage mums: either they’ve made a mistake that could burden them for life, or they’re far too young to really know what having children could mean for their future.
If you agree with those sentiments, you might just change your mind after spending some time in the company of the 19-year-old star of Teen Mom UK (bizarrely not renamed Teen Mum), Megan Salmon-Ferrari – who is mum to Mckenzie, 20 months, and three-month-old Dulcie-Mae.
“I had Mckenzie when I was 17 years old and it was the right time for me,” she insists. “I just felt like something was missing. Dulcie-Mae was also planned. My sister says I took to being a mum like a duck to water. I’m very domesticated.”
That’s not to say that Megan and her partner, mechanic Dylan, also 19, haven’t had their ups and downs along the way, and their rocky relationship is played out in MTV’s second series of the show that follows the lives of five young women in the UK as they bring up their babies.
“We’re back together and we’re living together,” says Megan, who lives in Grays, Essex.
“I’ve got somewhere for me and the kids. We broke up because sometimes he wouldn’t come home from work and he’d get back about 5am. I didn’t feel resentful, but I did think: ‘I’m raising your child and cooking your dinner and you don’t even bother to come home to us.’ I’d had enough of sitting in on my own.”
“Dylan has proved that he has changed,” Megan explains. “He’s stopped going out as much and spends more time with the family, so now we’re back on track.”
Although Megan and Dylan have put the past behind them, Megan’s family aren’t quite so ready to let Dylan back into their lives.
“Dylan was there at Dulcie-Mae’s birth and so were my family,” says Megan. “They were fine, but they’re not talking at the minute.”
Unlike an army of other mums who say having two children is more than double the work, for Megan it’s a breeze.
“I’m quite lucky because they’re both really good so I’m not finding it difficult at all, to be honest,” she says.
“Dulcie-Mae sleeps until about 5am, wakes up for her bottle and then goes back to sleep until about 10am. And Mckenzie absolutely loves her. He kisses and hugs her all the time. When he came to the hospital to meet her for the first time, he was like: ‘Who’s this little plaything?’”
As well as looking after two young children, Megan also has two businesses.
“One is a handmade craft business and one’s a pearl-popping business where I open oysters and get pearls out, which are then mounted on to jewellery,” she explains.
“I’ll always have my own business. I don’t like working for other people. I prefer to build my own dreams rather than help someone else build theirs.”
Since appearing on the first series of Teen Mom UK, Megan’s brush with fame has been a bit of a mixed bag.
“I’ve had people come up to me and ask for pictures. I have a chat with them, which is nice,” she says.
“But you get the odd person on social media who thinks they know me and puts their two pence in. It’s annoying sometimes, and if I’m having a bad day I’ll reply saying: ‘You haven’t got a clue.’”
Megan also admits that having cameras following you around all the time can sometimes be a chore, although that hasn’t put her off wanting a role in The Only Way Is Essex.
And she is good friends with some of the other Teen Mom cast, including Amber Butler, Chloe Patton and Mia Boardman.
“We have a group chat that we’re all on and we talk to each other nearly every day,” she says. “If one of us has a problem, we’ll all be there reassuring them.”
Teen Mom UK 2 starts next Wednesday on MTV
