CREATED using the minimal cast, plot and SFX necessary, It Comes At Night is a terrific horror movie following the golden rule of cinema – less is more.
You spend half your time working out what has happened and the rest (more worryingly) on what is going to happen next.
Similar in tone to both The Walking Dead and Cormac McCarthy’s The Road, viewers are left to fill the gaps, letting our imaginations lead us down darker roads than a film ever could by showing everything.
We begin in some form of post-Apocalyptic world where “an event” has led to humans being locked away.
There is clearly some sort of airborne plague at hand, but whether that creates monsters or just hysteria is never shown.
Although I certainly would not be spending much time in their forest.
The family, led by the excellent Joel Edgerton, board themselves up in their remote farmhouse and rarely go out, until they are put to the test by the arrival of another family seeking refuge.
After a friendly beginning, paranoia and mistrust sets in.
This is a dark and upsetting horror, with zero gimmicks but plenty of unease to leave you thinking about its final scenes for a long while.
