Ant McPartlin’s ex-girlfriend and Byker Grove star Nicola Bell says he’s ‘doing well’ after his first week in rehab
ANT McPartlin is being lent support by his ex-girlfriend and former Byker Grove star Nicola Bell following the revelation that he's gone to rehab for booze and drug addiction.
Declan Donnelly's hosting partner, 41, dated Nicola - who is now a married mum-of-one - during his time on the BBC school-set drama in the early 90s, and now she's revealed they still talk.
And Nicola, who played Debbie Dobson in the show but is now a professional make-up artist after working as a flight attendant, is hopeful for Ant's swift recovery.
Nicola said: “We’re still in touch and still friends and I know that Ant is doing well, thankfully.
“He’s had some lovely messages from people and a lot of support and that obviously means a lot.”
Nicola's news comes after singer Robbie Williams pledged to support Ant, knowing full well what addiction can do to a person.
Other actors from the show have come forward to support the Geordie presenter after news of his struggle emerged.
Lyndyann Barrass, 41, who played red-haired school girl Spruggie, said: “Ant knows my thoughts are with him.”
Meanwhile Billy Fane, 69, who played moustached youth club boss Geoff, added: “I was really sorry to hear of the problems he’s been having and I wish him a quick recovery.
"He’s a lovely, hard-working lad.”
Ant is expected to spend two months in rehab and those keeping watch over him have already confiscated his phone.
For much of his time there Ant will be in a wheelchair following surgery on his right knee.
It was the chronic pain he suffered from the damaged knee that triggered his painkiller addiction.
Revealing his sad news, Ant told The Sun on Sunday: “I feel like I have let a lot of people down and for that I am truly sorry.“I want to thank my wife, family and closest friends for helping me through this really difficult time.
“I’ve spoken out because I think it’s important that people ask for help if they’re going through a rough time and get the proper treatment to help their recovery.”
