Good Morning Britain viewers hail Piers Morgan a ‘legend’ after he repeatedly grills MP and Muslim imam about London Bridge attack
GOOD Morning Britain viewers today hailed Piers Morgan a “legend” for his hard-hitting grilling of an MP and imam about the London Bridge terror attacks.
After today’s episode opened with shocking scenes of the violence on Saturday night, Piers had two heated discussions with Culture Secretary Karen Bradley and North London imam Ajmal Masroor.
He shouted at Mrs Bradley, the MP for Staffordshire Moorlands, as she seemingly refused to say whether there were more or less police officers on the streets since Theresa May became Prime Minister.
He angrily asked: “Why can you not answer a simple question?” and repeatedly said, “I will ask again,” as he resorted to yelling in an attempt to get an answer.
After a handful of attempts, Piers ranted: “Still I want a straight answer – do we have more or less armed police?”
In an earlier interview, Mr Masroor clashed with Piers after the presenter claimed that extremist mosques are being funded by Saudi radicals known as Wahhabists.
The imam repeatedly denied that any mosques in Britain are promoting radical views and blamed the internet instead.
Mr Masroor said: “With due respect to you, do you have any evidence?
“If you know of a mosque like this please let me know, I’ll be the first one to go and not only protest but demand its closure. I don’t know of mosques who do this in this country.
“Anyone who does what we’re all condemning, they don’t become radicalised from mosques, they become radicalised from the internet.”
Piers replied in disbelief: “I can’t let you get away with saying there’s no Wahhabist preaching in this country, there are not Wahhabist mosques, because we know there are.
“For you to stand there and say this isn’t happening at all means either you’ve got your head in the sand or you just don’t want to recognise this problem.”
Mr Masroor said: “Piers, I didn’t say any of that, I said if you know of a mosque please tell me.
“Don’t apportion the blame on the mosques when mosques and the Muslim community have played a huge role in keeping people safe.”
He accused the presenter of being divisive by adopting a “you and us” attitude to the problem of Islamic extremism in Britain.
Fans quickly took to Twitter to give the thumbs-up to Piers’ direct style in the wake of the horror attacks on Saturday night.
One wrote: “you are legend, you say it as it is, RESPECT,” while another commented: “Some great reporting & interviews this morning @piersmorgan @susannareid100 @CharlotteHawkns we need you guys on a 24hr rolling news channel.”
A third commented on his questioning style, writing: “Piers was persistent as ever but never got a straight answer,” while one followed with: “Well done for always challenging what people believe and making people think more… don’t always agree but always respect you.
Another rounded off with: “What a hero. You asked all the questions that the country want answers for. I agree all police officers need a firearm instantly.”
Today’s GMB was extended by an extra hour – meaning the Lorraine show was cancelled.
Yesterday outspoken Piers took to the social media site to backtrack on comments he previously made about pop star Ariana Grande following her inspirational One Love Manchester gig in the wake of last month’s bombing in the city.
