JAMIE EAST AT THE MOVIES

Amy Schumer’s Snatched provides some genuinely funny moments – just not enough

AMY SCHUMER and Goldie Hawn team up for this daft adventure comedy about a daughter (impulsive, needy) who winds up on holiday with her mother (cautious, ditsy) after she gets dumped.

But their trip to  an Ecuadorian paradise  – which for the majority of the film has a sky more akin to Bridlington – goes very wrong.

Problems come in the form of  kidnappers, murders and accepting drinks off strangers while washing your bits in the sink.

Schumer has come in for all sorts of flak lately, not all of it unwarranted.

But some pretty awful overacting aside, there are some genuinely funny moments here, and Goldie Hawn’s presence brings a good, safe pair of hands, balancing out the double act well.

The trouble is, there’s just not enough of them and the jokes that miss, really miss.

For every laugh-out-loud moment involving a certain whale fluid, there’s an ill-judged scene with a CGI tapeworm that neither makes sense nor adds to the story apart from as a way of talking about body parts again.

This is a film Adam Sandler would be very happy with but for one brimming with such messages of empowerment and working through differences, it keeps reverting back to base-level attempts at shock comedy.

And  all these, because of the film’s  leads Schumer and Hawn, already feel a bit passé. But despite its flimsiness and the slightly tired schtick, Snatched is just about better than average.
