Speaking to OK! magazine, Cara said: "I was at the hospital when I found out, having a procedure to remove some abnormal cells after I had my smear test.

"They have to check if you're pregnant first, but I said to the doctor: 'I don't think there's any need for that'.

"They did it anyway and the nurse came back and said: 'You're pregnant!'.

"I was with my mum and we looked at each other in complete shock. I went in for one thing and came out expecting a baby."

The 26-year-old explained that it's a "routine procedure" and doesn't affect the baby.

She continued: "I have to have a smear test every year because there's cancer in our family - one of my cousins is currently having chemotherapy for cervical cancer.

"I have a few more procedures and once the baby is born I'll have a final one.

"Once all the cells are removed I'll be fine and there's no effect on the baby."

Cara also told how she found out about the pregnancy just days after her cousin died from cancer and her family were going through a hard time.

She said: "Me and Nathan would always speak about kids, we said maybe when we're 30, but sometimes life doesn't go to plan.

"It was overwhelming and came when my family was going through a hard time.

"We found out I was pregnant three days after my 19-year-old cousin passed away from cancer."

Cara's cousin had been ill for two years and described his death as "awful".

She continued: "I'm not superstitious, but my family and I are looking at it like we've been given a new life after one was taken away.

"I know it sounds cliche but I believe things like this are meant to be."

Cara insists she has no plans to reconcile with Nathan despite the impending arrival – but he has vowed to support her every step of the way when the baby arrives.

The former Towie star told : “It’s a shame and a sad situation.  I know a lot of people will think, well you’re going to have a baby together so just stay together – but we’re not going to do that just to look like the perfect couple."

Cara also said her future on Towie "hangs in the balance"; as she's "too vulnerable" to go back after her shock pregnancy news.

Nathan also broke his silence on the news tweeting: "Yea it's true...I'm going to be a Dad. It's an emotional time for me and I'm overwhelmed by the support from both my family and friends."
