Hollyoaks viewers were left devastated last week when it was revealed that fan favourite Freddie Roscoe would be leaving the show.

Actor Charlie Clapham took on the role in May 2013 and his character has since had been the focus of major storylines including murder, cheating and a multi-generational family affair.

Tonight Freddie will make a dash for it as he faces a 12 year prison sentence for attacking Nick Savage, whose rape charges against Ellie Nightingale were dropped.

And despite the fact that Ellie is willing to give up everything to be with him on the run, he decides that he can't take her away from his family.

After they say goodbye to one another, Darren drives him away.

Actor Charlie revealed that after four years at the soap, the "time was right to hang up the leather jacket".

He said: "It was an incredibly hard decision but I was excited to see how the writing team and producers were going to have Freddie Roscoe sign out.

"Fortunately for Fred and me, we got to leave the 'Oaks on somewhat heroic terms after Freddie took matters of Ellie's attacker into his own hands, literally."

Charlie admitted that he was "flattered" not to have been killed off.

He added: "I think it's a good sign. I like to think of the possibility of being able to go back one day."

  • Hollyoaks airs weeknights on Channel 4 at 6.30pm with a first look episode following at 7pm on E4
