What is The Island about and how does it work?

The Island is a tough reality TV show which sees groups of ordinary people try to survive in a team on a remote island without being given any food or shelter.

The first series just featured men, and the second two series featured separate groups of men and women.

In the fifth series, the group of 16 islanders will be divided up according to their income.

The first eight castaways are all wealthy professionals living off an average income of £100,000 a year – a wage only earned by a fraction of Brits.

The other group all earn below the UK national average wage.

The series looks at the issue of wealth disparity, and whether our economic security at home affects our ability to cope in the wild.

Where is The Island filmed?

In series five, The Island is filmed on a group of remote, uninhabited islands in the Pacific Ocean.

The contestants face extreme tropical weather, limited resources and environmental hazards.

The first two series featured the island Isla Gibraleón, off the coast of Panama.

The nearby Isla San Telmo featured in the second and third series.

The fourth series used Isla Bayoneta and a smaller neighbouring island close enough to reach at low tide.

Does The Island really push its contestants to the limit?

The show was shrouded in controversy when the press accused producers of doing too much to help the contestants, like giving them water and putting animals near their camp.

Show bosses have since admitted caiman crocodiles and other animals are added to the islands to spare any damage to their "natural eco-systems".

But only a day's worth of water is given to the group, who also get two knives and two machetes, plus whistles and a medical kit.

Plants are also routinely planted on the relevant islands to supplement the existing supply, and contestants receive up to two days' survival training, radios and a satellite phone.

Ofcom has never found an issue with the show despite hundreds of complaints about the slaughter of animals "for entertainment".

A celebrity version of the show was on in 2016 for Stand Up To Cancer, and featured the likes of comic Dom Joly, comedian Josie Long and Towie's Lydia Bright.

A second celebrity series ran in 2017 with former Corrie actor Ryan Thomas, athlete Iwan Thomas and comedian Mark Watson.
