Star Wars fans predict Ewan McGregor will return for spin-off Jedi movie in 2020 after he teases comeback following news of a ‘big announcement’
The latest installment in the saga is 2 expected to be announced at next week's Star Wars Celebration
THE Force is strong with Ewan McGregor as fans predict he is set to return to the Star Wars franchise.
Die hard fans of the intergalactic saga attending next week’s Star Wars Celebration in Orlando have been told to expect a big surprise announcement - and there have been strong hints that the big reveal will be an Obi-Wan Kenobi spin-off movie.
Ewan McGregor portrayed the role of the Jedi master between 1999 and 2005 in the commercially successful but critically questionable Star Wars prequel movies.
There’s currently a confirmed but untitled spin-off movie scheduled for a 2020 release. Originally rumoured to be a Yoda origins story, an Obi-Wan spin-off is now looking much more likely.
The Scottish actor, 46, has recently spoken of his desire to reprise the role and fill in the gaps in the iconic character’s story.
Ewan teased: “I’ve been very open to say I’d be happy to do it, if they want to do it.”
He’d previously revealed where he thinks the new instalments of Obi-Wan’s story would take place.
Speaking to French media channel Premiere, he said: “I always thought there was a story to tell between the last and the first film with Alec Guinness.
"It would be fun to return to that story now that I’m older.
"I am the right age for that matter. I’m 45, Alec Guinness was 60. I could do two of them!”
Since the Star Wars franchise has been taken over by Disney, the character of Obi-Wan has been drip fed back into canon.
Ewan McGregor made a top secret voice cameo in 2015’s The Force Awakens which fuelled rumours he could be the father of Daisy Ridley’s force sensitive character, Rey.
The character of Obi-Wan was also brought into Disney’s hit animation show, Star Wars Rebels though not voiced by Ewan McGregor.
Any upcoming movie will have to battle divided fan opinions on recent portrayals of Obi-Wan Kenobi. Ewan McGregor faced criticism for his take in the prequel movies whilst fans of Star Wars Rebels complained over the criminally short battle between Kenobi and former-rival Darth Maul.
The Obi-Wan spin-off movie will expand on Rebels storyline of what the Jedi master has been doing in the years between whilst watching over Luke Skywalker.
With Darth Vader’s inclusion into 2016's Rogue One movie being the definitive favourite moment for Star Wars fans, it’s highly likely that bosses will be desperately hoping to write in the iconic villain for a rematch between the former master and padawan.
Currently confirmed movies in the Star Wars franchise are Episode VIII: The Last Jedi in December of this year, a Han Solo spin-off movie in summer 2018 and the untitled Episode IX in 2019.
