RIHANNA bowed out of her two-episode stint in Bates Motel in spectacular fashion on Monday night's episode.
The singer-come-actress starred as Janet Leigh's iconic Marion Crane but viewers were taken by surprise as the producers completely changed the character's fate.
In Alfred Hitchcock's 1960 classic Psycho, Marion was stabbed to death by Norman Bates as she showered in her room in his motel.
However, in the TV adaptation it was another character - Marion's cheating boyfriend Sam Loomis - who was brutally murdered.
After discovering Sam (Austin Nichols) was actually married and had been living a double life, Marion made the decision to flee with the $40,000 she'd stole from her role as a notary public.
Meanwhile, Norman (Freddie Highmore) crept into her room expecting to find Marion in the shower only to discover Sam in her place, who he swiftly dispatched in a murderous frenzy, declaring: “Oh Mother. What have I done?”
Discussing the show's take on the iconic scene, executive producer Kerry Ehrin told that it wasn't always their intention to let Marion survive.
She said: "No, we worked a long time on those two episodes and breaking that story. We tried out every possible scenario. We landed on the one that got us the most excited in the room and had the most impact, and both honored “Psycho” and pushed the story we were telling in “Bates Motel.”
"It’s telling the story of Norman and what’s going on inside of him and pushed it to a great place by having him kill Sam, who in many ways is a psychological stand-in for his own father."
In her debut on the show the week previously, Rihanna initiated a live drinking game on Instagram as she was too embarrassed to watch herself on screen.
