The popular programme set tongues wagging when it hit screens last year thanks to the raunchy episodes, one of which saw Tom Hiddleston – who played the role of Jonathan Pine in season one – strip down and bare his bum in an intimate sex scene.

It was a big ratings hit too and had success at different award shows, with the returning trio winning a Golden Globe each in their respective categories.

It was revealed earlier this month that the successful show would be returning for a second series.

However, the show's script writers will have to start from scratch as John le Carre did not pen a sequel to the book on which the drama is based.

At the end of the first series Laurie's character Roper was arrested by arms dealers took over the van and his fate is unknown.

When asked what happened to him, the insider continued: "That would be telling. You will have to wait.

“Hugh, Tom and Olivia are all committed, we’re just working on the story, and then it’s down to availability.

The programme’s director, Susanne Bier, is believed to be working on the production with the BBC and American co-producers AMC.

However, the creative team behind the series fear a second series may not “live up” to their debut show.
