Apple Tree Yard author reveals next book will follow Ben Chaplin’s character Mark Costley after being sent to prison
BBC bonkbuster Apple Tree Yard caused plenty of shocks with its explicit romps.
And fans will be thrilled to learn that LOUISE DOUGHTY, who wrote the book the show was based on, is penning a sequel.
Louise revealed she wants to explore BEN CHAPLIN’s Mark Costley character after he was sent to prison when his web of lies became unravelled.
The author added: “There’s a lot more exploration to be done. What happens to a fantasist when his fantasies are revealed to be dust? This is a man who has lived by this image of himself all his life, as a lothario and someone heroic.”
EMILY WATSON’s character had sex below Parliament in a cupboard, a toilet and an alley after starting an affair with Costley, who she believed was a spy.
Appearing at London Book Fair last week, Louise said the next story was likely to be about Costley’s journey after prison.
She explained: “I reckon Costley emerges from prison a broken man, so how does he put himself back together?

“That would be the angle. What everyone would want to know is, does he get back with Yvonne?
The Beeb revealed last month they are working on a second series of The Night Manager despite there being no sequel to JOHN LE CARRE’s book.
At least Louise has given them a head start.
Meeting Mary's cutie pie
ON Bake Off, MARY BERRY would often put PAUL HOLLYWOOD in his place when they didn’t agree.
But this time it is a different Paul as her co-star – husband Paul Hunnings.
The pair share the screen tonight in the latest episode of her BBC2 show Mary Berry Everyday.
They are seen driving in a vintage car near their Buckinghamshire home before visiting an antiques market.
On the show, Mary also reveals she made him take her out on dates, rather than her wooing him with a steak meal, when they first started dating.
She wanted him to realise she was more than “just a cook”.
The veteran presenter will likely rattle viewers by using obscure rice-shaped pasta orzo in one of her recipes.
It comes after fans were outraged when she put white wine and double cream in her spaghetti bolognese.
They also complained when she was using pricey posh nosh such as venison, lobster and freshly caught langoustines on a show about everyday food.
But she also pays a visit to a pie shop and confesses there’s nothing she likes more than tucking into a savoury pastry.
Katie's Kier-y eyed
KATIE PRICE has broken her year-long booze ban – after less than three months.
The glamour model looked bleary-eyed as she left the surprise party she threw for husband KIERAN HAYLER’s 30th.
Katie had told the panel on Loose Women about her plans to go sober in 2017.
An insider said: “Katie looked the worse for wear as the night went on.
“Pals were even getting her to neck a bottle of water because she looked wasted.”
SOAPBOX
LAUREN is sharing her problems with half of the Square in EASTENDERS.
She first confides in Whitney about her issues concerning the ongoing romance with Steven. And then she turns to Jane to speak about relationships before Whitney tells her to fight for it. Meanwhile, there’s congratulations in store for Daniel in CORONATION STREET. Robert admits in the Bistro that he overheard Daniel speak to his lecturer about getting a place at Oxford University. And Sinead is stunned when a proud Ken announces he has called the family together to celebrate his acceptance. I’m sure there will be a twist to this.
It's maul over, Jez
IT’S usually JEREMY KYLE who is giving out the mauling to the guests on his morning show.
But specialist canine trainers turned the tables on him for his new programme.
Jeremy, who has a fear of dogs, looks petrified as the Alsatian is told to bite into his padded suit.
A source said: “It was filmed at the Met Police’s dog training centre and was pretty terrifying for him.”
On ITV’s The Kyle Files, tomorrow at 8pm, Jeremy investigates how gangs use the pets as weapons by teaching them to attack.
I’m sure he’ll talk it through with Graham later.
