Who is Salvador Sobral?

Salvador Sobral was born on December 28, 1989 in the Portuguese capital of Lisbon.

The 28-year-old singer competed on the third series of Idolos, Portugal's version of Pop Idol in 2009.

It seems that talent runs in Salavdor's family as his sister, Luísa Sobral, also competed in the Portuguese contest coming third in the first season.

How was Salvador Sobral chosen to represent Portugal?

Salvador Sobral entered a national competition to become the artist that would represent Portugal in this year's Eurovision Song Contest.

The show, Festival da Canção 2017, was organised by Portuguese broadcaster Rádio e Televisão de Portugal and involved two semi finals followed by a grand final on March 5.

Salvador Sobral stormed to victory with the highest possible score from the judges and the second highest score from the public vote.

What song did Salavdor Sobral perform?

He sung Amar Pelos Dois, the title of which means "Love for both".

The song was composed and written by his sister, Luísa Sobral.

It's entirely in Portuguese and proved popular at the semi-finals.

What were the odds on Portugal winning?

Just before the contest started SunBets gave odds of 13/8 for Portugal to win the Eurovision Song Contest.

This put Salavdor Sobral among the firm favourites to win.

However, given the stiff competition, he did well to win by such a long way.

What are the lyrics to Amar Pelos Dois?

Se um dia alguém perguntar por mim
Diz que vivi p’ra te amar
Antes de ti, só existi
Cansado e sem nada p’ra dar.(amar pelos dois)

Meu bem, ouve as minhas preces
Peço que regresses, que me voltes a querer
Eu sei que não se ama sozinho
Talves devagarinho possas voltar a aprender.

Meu bem, ouve as minhas preces
Peço que regresses, que me voltes a querer
Eu sei que não se ama sozinho

Talves devagarinho possas voltar a aprender.

Se o teu coração não quiser ceder
Não sentir paixão, não quiser sofrer
Sem fazer planos do que virá depois
O meu coração pode amar pelos doisss.

How many times has Portugal won the Eurovision Song Contest?

Portugal has taken part in Eurovision a total of 48 times since their first appearance in 1964.

They were the longest running contestants never to have won the competition, having placed highest back in 1966 when they came sixth.

This has now been firmly changed by Salvador's success as the West European country picked up its first victory in Kiev.

Since the introduction of the semi-finals they have failed to progress to the final eight times and, after failing to qualify in 2015, they withdrew from the 2016 competition.
