If she does sign up, it would be the Believe singer’s first time ever playing at Worthy Farm — even though she has been making music since before the event even started.

Cher, who is worth £275million, is believed to have turned down offers in the past due to disagreements over her fee.

But a music insider said: “Cher is practically the legend of all pop music legends. She would be incredible.

“It’s been a long time coming but she is finally in meaningful talks with Glastonbury about playing the legend’s slot.

“Everything is very much in the planning stages but Cher is hoping to play a handful of shows in the UK next year and Glastonbury could be one of them.

“The idea of a full scale tour just doesn’t interest her anymore.”

She hinted at the possibility last December during a chat on Radio 2.

Asked by host Rylan Clark if she would perform there, she said: “I’d like to.”

If she does sign up, the show will coincide with the 60th anniversary of her music career, and the second instalment of Cher’s memoir which is expected to come out next year, following part one this November.

It will also follow her 21-track greatest hits record Forever, coming out in September, and her induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame on October 19.

Shania Twain performed in the legend’s slot in June, while previous big names include Kylie Minogue, Dolly Parton, Lionel Richie and Diana Ross.

Cher hasn’t toured the UK since 2019, so it would be impressive to see her back on stage.

She had her first chart hit here with her ex-husband Sonny Bono, as Sonny & Cher, when they went to No1 in 1965 with I Got You Babe.

Glastonbury didn’t open its gates until five years later.
