Catfish star Nev Schulman says he’s ‘starting to understand meaning of gratitude’ as he recalls horror bike accident
CATFISH star Nev Schulman has posted for the first time after suffering a terrifying injury in a motorcycle accident.
The MTV star, 39, who revealed in an Instagram post on Saturday that he broke his neck after colliding with a truck, says he is starting to have a new outlook on life.
He went on to indicate that the accident has changed his perspective on life.
"I’m really starting to understand the meaning of gratitude. For the big and little things before the accident, and now everything moving forward," Nev wrote.
The incident occurred on August 5 when the MTV show host was headed to pick up his two-year-old son from school.
Nev said he was riding alone on his motorcycle to get his son, and was ultimately glad no one was with him,
“I never made it to pick up my son from school on the bike,” Nev wrote in the post caption.
“In fact in some ways, I’m glad I didn’t. I was alone on impact. Me and the truck. And then I guess the pavement. I was alone and unconscious."
"And then conscious," he continued.
"Maybe I was fine (I wasn’t). Maybe I can still do my long run on Thursday (I couldn’t)."
He went on to explain that he was rushed to the ICU, where they determined two nerves controlling his muscles were snapped in the accident.
This injury has been known to render people unable to walk ever again.
“I broke my neck,” Nev said, adding, "C5 and C6 to be exact."
Luckily, the TV personality is not paralyzed as his injuries were stable fractures.
"My hands were a question mark there for a minute but the human body is incredible and so are HUMANS," he added.
"The incredible knowledge and care from everyone in the medical community has been so remarkable."
Nev continued, "It’s hard to feel sorry for myself when I hear from the doctors about how many people with similar injuries will never walk again."
In the post, the Catfish host thanked the EMS and staff at the Southampton Emergency Room, as well as those at the Stony Brook ICU who provided care.
The images and videos shared on Instagram show Nev in the hospital, undergoing tests while wearing a neck brace.
He also shared a photo of the x-ray of his neck, that showed a bend in the bone, as well as the scar along the back of his neck.
Other photos show the TV star in good spirits with his wife and children, who brought drawings to the hospital for support.
Several other videos show hospital staff members helping Nev recover, such as by practicing walking.
Nev has been married to Laura Perlongo sine 2017.
