What is Prime Suspect 1973 about?

Prime Suspect 1973 is a prequel to the widely successful Prime Suspect series from the 1990s.

It tells the tale of 22-year-old Jane Tennison, an eager recruit to the police force, during her first days on the beat.

During the series, she is forced to endure flagrant sexism before being thrown in at the deep end with a murder enquiry.

The lead character is the same in both the prequel and the original, although the actress who plays her has naturally changed.

Who is in the cast of Prime Suspect 1973?

Stefanie Martini (Jane Tennison)

Stefanie has been tasked with the enviable job of taking on the role of Jane - the character made famous by Dame Helen Mirren.

The star is still a relatively new actress, having only five credits on IMDb, starting from last year.

She is also playing Lady Ev in the upcoming Wizard of Oz themed show, Emerald City, and played Mary in last year's TV series Doctor Thorne.

Sam Reid (DI Len Bradfield)

Sam Reid has been acting for the past ten years - and will take on the role of DI Len Bradfield.

His film credits include 2014 film The Riot Club, based on the play Posh which depicts an Oxford elite club of spoiled middle classers.

He also appeared as John Glenn in series The Astronaut Wives Club in 2015, and as a young Stellan Skarsgard in The Railway Man.

Prime Suspect 1973: DS Spencer Gibbs (Blake Harrison) A determined cop whose short fuse gets him into trouble.

Blake Harrison (DS Spencer Gibbs)

Blake is known to most as the dim-witted but lovable Neil in E4 comedy The Inbetweeners.

The show lasted four series and two movies - all of which were critically acclaimed.

Since then, he has struggled to shake off being typecast in that role - appearing in the movie adaptation of Dad's Army, and TV series' Edge of Heaven and Tripped.

None of which have matched the success of the Inbetweeners.

Alun Armstrong (Clifford Bentley)

Alun Armstrong has an impressive career that spans fifty years as well as TV and film.

Credits include the film adaptation of Black Beauty, Braveheart and Eragon.

On TV, he featured as Adrian's dad George in Adrian Mole: The Cappucino Years., Bedtime and Little Dorrit.

He will be known to most however as Brian Lane in hustler drama New Tricks, which ran from 2003 - 2015.
