Who is Benedict Cumberbatch?
Benedict Cumberbatch, 42, is an actor from London.
His parents, Timothy Carlton and Wanda Ventham, are also actors and he has a half-sister Tracy Peacock, from Wanda's first marriage.
The star started learning his craft at boarding school, taking part in several plays during his school year.
After completing his compulsory school education, Benedict spent a year in a Tibetan monastery in India - where he taught English.
He eventually studied drama at Manchester University.

In 2004, after working exclusively in television, Benedict was widely praised for his portrayal of Professor Stephen Hawking in the TV biopic Hawking.
Until that point, he had featured in short-lived series Fortysomething, in one episode of Tipping the Velvet and in a story arc on Silent Witness.
He continued to work in TV until 2006's Starter for 10, and then the Oscar-nominated film Atonement as the creepy Paul Marshall.
As a result, Benedict was already an established growing talent before landing the leading role in the hugely successful BBC show Sherlock in 2010.
Starring as the famed detective opposite Martin Freeman as Watson, the show has run for four series to date - each three episodes long.
Due to the series he has been recognised for his work across the globe - and was propelled into widely recognised films including The Imitation Game, 12 Years a Slave, Star Trek Into Darkness and Zoolander 2.
Between these, Benedict has worked alongside the National Theatre and has appeared in plays including a modern retelling of Hamlet, and Frankenstein.

Who is Benedict Cumberbatch's wife Sophie Hunter and when did they get married?
Sophie Hunter is a 40-year-old theatre and opera director who works on experimental plays.
The pair met as teenagers but only got together as a couple 17 years later.
They are thought to have started dating in 2013, however, the couple makes an effort to keep their private life away from the spotlight.
Their first public appearance was in June 2014, and Benedict's parents announced their engagement in the marriage section of The Times in November 2014.
Sophie and Benedict married in 2015 in a private, Isle of Wight ceremony in front of family and friends.
Robert Rinder, known most famously as TV's Judge Rinder, acted as best man.

Do Benedict Cumberbatch and Sophie Hunter have children?
Benedict and Sophie's first child, Christopher Carlton, was born in June 2015.
The two announced the arrival of their newborn with the following statement: “Benedict Cumberbatch and Sophie Hunter are delighted to announce the arrival of their beautiful son.
"We would kindly ask everyone to respect the family’s privacy during these next few precious weeks.”
In September 2016, the couple announced they were expecting their second child.
Their second son Hal Auden was born in March 2017.
