IRISH fans unleashed their fury at This Morning after actress Ruth Negga who grew up in Limerick was labelled as British.
The incident occurred during a style segment when Ruth, 35, who was born in Ethiopia and grew up in Ireland was accidentally repatriated to the UK.
Speaking of the Oscar nominee’s red Valentino gown, she stylist sad: “She’s British, she’s really flying the flag for British style,” as Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby nodded along.
Irish fans immediately picked up on the gaffe and took to Twitter to vent their fury.
One said: “What is with #ThisMorning? #ruthnegga is Irish, not British. Stop claiming that which does not belong to you!! #IrishOscarNominee”
Another added: “They are saying on This Morning that Ruth Negga is British. Thought she was born in Ethiopia and raised in Limerick. Am I wrong?????”
A third angrily stated: “#ThisMorning RUTH NEGGA IS IRISH…. IRISH. NOT BRITISH. good god”
While someone else suggested that the show invests in a map: “Ruth Negga is not British, she is of Irish and Ethiopian descent! Please do your research and look at a map from time to time #ThisMorning”
Ruth was nominated for Best Actress for her role in Loving and had a blue ribbon ACLU.
The ACLU is of particular significance to Ruth as the movie Loving features the work of the ACLU. The non-profit organisation supplied the legal resources for the couple featured in the film to fight their case in 1958 when their marriage was deemed in violation of Virginia’s anti-miscengenation law.
ACLU stands for The American Civil Liberties Union and the ribbons are in support of the new “Stand with ACLU” initiative.
The campaign was launched last week and Hollywood stars are being encouraged to wear the ribbon as an act of solidarity with the organisation which has campaigned for nearly 100 years to defend and protect the individual civil rights of citizens.
Recently the ACLU have spoken out about protecting the rights of those they feel have been threatened under the administration of Donald Trump.
