TMZ reports how the massive prop crashed to the floor and crushed a camera as it tore down a curtain.

A witness told the website that the crash made a "horrifying sound" as it happened.

The incident happened at 11.30am as host Jimmy Kimmel was rehearsing a skit for the live show, but fortunately the funnyman wasn't on stage at the time.

An ABC or Oscars spokeswoman has yet to comment on the incident.

What are the Academy Awards?

The Academy Awards is an annual ceremony hosted by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Now in its 89th year, the show (dubbed The Oscars after the man-shaped statuette received on winning) is considered by most in the entertainment industry as the highest honour to receive in recognition for their work on and off screen.

The Academy is a 6,000-strong group made up of film industry professionals such as actors, directors and producers - making the awards stand-out against shows such as the Golden Globes as it is a vote by the nominees' peers.

Who's perfoming at the ceremony this year?

The American singer Sara Bareilles will be performing as the tributes section is screened at this year's ceremony.

Sara's most famous hits in the UK are the 2007 chart-topper Love Song, and the 2013 single Brave - which was used as part of the Disney and Pixar film of the same name.

It is yet to be announced what song Sara will be performing at the show - but it will doubtless be a tearjerker.
