You can’t help but be gripped by the opening scenes of this new crime drama, which is a prequel to the long-running police show starring Helen Mirren as the hard-drinking – but utterly brilliant – DCI Jane Tennison.
As the rain beats down on the body of a young woman dumped by some bins, a man disappears into the shadows, giving us a starting point for the young Jane Tennison’s first involvement in a murder case.
Doctor Thorne’s Stefanie Martini plays the WPC determined to prove her worth in the male-dominated – and inherently sexist – world of policing.
There’s always the risk that fans of the original series won’t take Stefanie to heart because the role
is always going to be synonymous with Dame Helen. But if you view it as a separate entity, it’s really rather good.
NEW! Harry Hill’s Alien Fun Capsule, 8.30pm, ITV
A celeb panel show where all the fun bits are placed into a capsule to placate invading aliens can only be the work of Harry Hill .
What the UFOs will make of Ainsley Harriott, a fantastically dry Kathy Burke, a bizarre YouTube cooking channel and a song advertising Coventry market, who knows? But it’s a treat for earthlings.
NEW! The Attack: Terror In The UK, 9pm, BBC Two
This drama-documentary is based on real-life stories from the British Counter-Terrorism police.
It shows a fictional man called Joseph (Arnold Oceng, above) who, after being radicalised in prison, plots a terrorist attack. Richard Walton, ex-Head of Counter Terrorism, describes the challenges the police face to keep us safe. Chilling stuff.
NEW! Extremely British Muslims, 10pm, Channel 4
This series follows the congregation of Birmingham Central Mosque, and begins by meeting Muslims looking for a partner.
Nayera, 30, gets to know a man whose idea of the role of women is different to her own, while Bella (above), 24, enlists help from the mosque’s Marriage Bureau. A fascinating start to an insightful series.
