EMMERDALE fans were left horrified on Tuesday night as Rhona Goskirk agreed to marry her rapist boyfriend Pierce Harris.
The Valentine's Day episode did not bring viewers joy as they watched the controlling character manage to guilt trip his girlfriend into accepting his marriage proposal on a second attempt.
The vet – who is played by actress Zoe Henry – has been repeatedly raped by partner Pierce in a hard-hitting storyline that has seen her suffer in silence, unsure of what has really happened to her.
Viewers have watched the uncomfortable scenes as Pierce forced himself on Rhona despite her repeatedly telling him to stop, and then acted as if it was completely normal, making her question what really happened.
Controlling Pierce had been passively aggressively abusing Rhona when she dared to stand up for herself and then used the anniversary of his dead wife to help victimise her further.
However, while Pierce was away she shared a kiss with her ex-husband Paddy Kirk while celebrating their divorce and the guilt of her actions led to her asking Pierce to propose for a second time.
Fans immediately flocked to Twitter to share their dismay as one wrote: "Please don't, Rhona. P-L-E-A-S-E #Emmerdale"
While another viewer added: "Wake up Rhona and get out while you still can, this guy is a freaking psycho #Emmerdale."
Another asked: "Is he really guilt-tripping her into accepting his proposal?! #emmerdale"
One fan fumed: "Rhona, really cannot be on her own?!?! She jumps from bloke to bloke???? It ain't normal!!!! #emmerdale"
Another stated: "This is gross, Valentine's Day is cancelled #Emmerdale".
Later in the episode, Rhona and Pierce announced their news in the pub and her ex Paddy couldn't hide his shock as he told them: "Congratulations... and I genuinely mean that."
