This Morning’s Holly Willoughby grills Apple Tree Yard star Mark Bonnar over controversial ending

The presenter wanted answers about the popular BBC One series which came to an end on Monday night

HOLLY Willoughby was "so cross" over the ending of Apple Tree Yard.

The This Morning presenter made the admission on Thursday's show as she chatted to actor Mark Bonnar, who played Dr Gary Carmichael on the popular BBC One drama.

The show came to an end on Monday, leaving some fans bewildered by what they saw as a controversial ending, and Holly was clearly one of them.

She told him: "Honestly, from that moment I've been waiting for you to come in to ask you that question because it incensed me.

"I was so cross about it."

Holly was referring to the scene between Mark and his on-screen wife Yvonne, played by Emily Watson, where they discuss whether he is going to tell their daughter about his affair with his intern.

She said: "When he said to her at the end he wasn’t going to tell his daughter, when he said to her ‘No I think you’ve put me through enough, she doesn’t need to know about the affair’ about Rosa, I’m so angry with him, because for me, is that not where it all started?

Laughing nervously, Mark thinks the disintegration of his character's marriage and the subsequent situations both Gary and Yvonne in particular found themselves in had started long before Rosa.

He said: "Very little happened before the show started between Rosa and me, there was maybe a kiss at the party but that was it, but I think the rot had set in way before, years before.

However Holly was desperate for answers, interrupting to ask if Mark thought Gary's decision was right.

He replied: "What not to tell?  I think he probably would in the future."

As Holly continued to discuss the issue, co-host Phillip Schofield laughed and said: "I just love the fact... what an opportunity… you get cross at your tele and say 'well that’s not right' then you get the opportunity to talk to the guy."

It was then that Holly admitted she had been itching for Mark to appear on the show.
