Who's in the cast of Doctor Who?
Peter Capaldi (The Doctor)
Peter Capaldi has become one of the UK's most-loved actors after securing both comedy and dramatic roles in both TV and film.
Playing the foul-mouthed Malcolm Tucker in political farcical comedy The Thick of It in 2005, his TV credits include Skins, Cold Blood, Waking the Dead and Doctor Who spin-off Torchwood.
The 58-year-old actor has featured in blockbusters including The Fifth Estate, Paddington and World War Z.
Before taking on the leading role, Peter had previously starred in an episode titled the Fires of Pompeii as sceptical father Caecilius in series four.
Pearl Mackie (Bill Potts)
Bill is Pearl Mackie's first major television role, with credits on IMDb only including one episode of the soap Doctors and a bit part in teh film Svengali.
The Brixton-born star has a degree in drama from the University of Bristol, which led her into the theatre rather than the screen.
She found out she had been given the role of Bill while performing in the West End production of The Curious Incident of The Dog in the Nighttime.
Matt Lucas (Nardole)
Matt Lucas is most known in the UK for writing and starring in the early 2000s comedy hit, Little Britain.
Since then, he has been seen in a number of small roles in huge film franchises, including Bridesmaids and playing Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum in the Alice in Wonderland reboot.
He launched his career with work partner David Walliams in a string of comedy shows including Rock Profile and appearing on Shooting Stars before eventually creating Little Britain.
Michelle Gomez (Missy/The Mistress)
A female reincarnation of The Doctor's arch-enemy The Master, Michelle Gomez has taken on the role of the villain - and has promised to return next series.
Michelle, who is most known for her comedy work in the wacky hospital comedy Green Wing, teased her return by dressing up as Missy and painting the TARDIS in a video posted to the official Doctor Who website.
In the video she's heard saying: "I'm hard at it - I'll be coming out of his soon!"
How long has Doctor Who been running?
Doctor Who initially came onto our screens in 1963 and ran for 26 years before the show was cancelled.
However, due to its devout cult following that never wavered, the BBC eventually reconsidered, and brought back the popular show for a new reboot.
In 2005, Christopher Eccleston led the cast of the group that returned as the Doctor - with Billie Piper's Rose acting as his companion.
Since then the show has remained one of the most popular shows on the BBC - and celebrated its fiftieth year by reuniting all thirteen Doctors with the help of technology for the first time on screen.
It was this episode that introduced Peter Capaldi as the next Doctor.
