David Beckham admits ‘mistakes’ and ‘tough times’ with Victoria – and he may have more trouble after he snubbed her Spice Girls tracks on Desert Island Discs
The footballer opted for the king of pop's 'The Girl Is Mine' in honour of daughter Harper as he opened up about family life on the radio show
DAVID BECKHAM snubbed his Spice Girls wife’s music on iconic radio show Desert Island Discs – but revealed they have renewed their wedding vows.
Instead of favouring Victoria’s chart-topping band’s worldwide hits – or even her Top 10 solo career records – the sporting icon opted for some more obscure choices including a jazz instrumental by French musician Sidney Bechet called Si Tu Vois Ma Mere.
During the 75th anniversary instalment on BBC Radio 4, hosted by Kirsty Young, that airs at 11.15am today, he does not discuss 42-year-old’s Victoria’s pop career at all.
He talks about their 19-year marriage – candidly admitting he has made “mistakes” during their relationship – and their panned over the top 1999 nuptials.
The 41-year-old said: “We did throw a lot at it. We have renewed our vows since then and it was a lot more private, there was about six people there in our house.”
He joked about their his and hers thrones and garish outfits, quipping: “That was pretty bold. Victoria’s was pretty nice.
“Mine, I’m like what was I thinking? I even had a top hat in purple. What was I thinking?”
David added: “Of course you make mistakes over the years, we all know marriage is difficult at times and it’s about working through it.
“Whenever we’ve come up against tough times, we know each other better than anybody knows us so we talk.
“Do we stay together because it’s a brand? Of course not. We stay together because we love each other.
“We stay together because we have four amazing children. Of course we go through tough times. When we go through tough times we work through it as a unit, as a family.”
Other tracks David picks ahead of any worldwide chart topping smashes by the Spice Girls or Victoria Beckham solo offerings include Wild Horses by the Rolling Stones and Michael Jackson featuring Paul McCartney’s The Girl Is Mine.
He explains the former is important to him as it helped him get through the fallout from his controversial 1998 World Cup sending off during England’s quarter final defeat to Argentina.
Talking about briefly becoming so hated by football fans effigies of him were hung from lampposts, he said: “This song when I hear it, it’s such a strong powerful song and sung by one of the best bands of all time.
“Whenever I’ve gone through a tough time or on the way to a game, this is one song that reminds me of great occasions.
“My family, Manchester United, Sir Alex Ferguson [got me through].
“The first person to call me was Sir Alex Ferguson. He said ‘son, get back to Manchester, you’ll be fine’ and that gave me strength to get through the toughest time I’ve been through in my life, in my career. I didn’t realise how bad it was going to be…
“I get emotional talking about it, it was such a difficult time.”
Michael Jackson’s track The Girl Is Mine is highlighted by David as a song he favours because he would sing it to five year old daughter Harper when she was a baby.
David, also a dad to sons Brooklyn, 17, Romeo, 14, and Cruz, 11, said: “When Harper was only a few weeks old I used to try and make her smile and blow raspberries on her belly and give her kisses and as I changed her nappy or just held her to my chest this was one song where…and I’m not really a dancer, so it was kind of a jig from side to side, and I used to spin her around.
“And it was that song that I look back and that was my special moment with my little girl.”
He also talks about his parents Ted and Sandra who he praises for instilling a hard working ethic from his childhood.
The star also sheds some light on his at times strained relationship with his father, adding: “The only time my dad said you know what son you’ve done really well was when I got my 100th cap.
“From time to time he’d say great game. It makes me emotional. Probably, everybody wants to make their parents proud.”
His difficult relationship with lifelong mentor Sir Alex Ferguson is also discussed including the infamous 2003 boot incident.
He laughs: “It was a freak accident. He could never probably do it again cos I’ve seen him in training.
“Even though he says he’s one of the best strikes of all time in the game.”
The star also condems the recent child sex abuse scandal in football, stating: “It’s disgraceful what has gone on and there has to be something done about it.
“I would like to think that the clubs are all on board with and that the FA are doing everything they can about the allegations and the more these ex pros voices their opinion that’s when there will be change.”
Traditionally with the show, David – who admits to having just as many shoes as his fashionista other half during the show – also chooses one book and a luxury item he can take to the desert island.
He picks Francis Malmont cook book On Fire and his beloved England caps.
Despite his musical snub to his wife David has previously told how the band’s hit Mama is his favourite Spice Girls song.
