KNICKER-BECKER GLORY

David Beckham opens up about bold fashion history on Desert Island Discs and recalls time he chose ‘burgundy, velvet knickerbockers’ over a suit for a wedding

David joined BBC Radio 4’s Kirsty Young to mark the show’s 75th anniversary and his fashion choices were top of the agenda

DAVID Beckham has reminisced about the time he chose to wear ‘burgundy, velvet knickerbockers’ rather than a suit for a wedding.

The former England football captain was speaking on Desert Island Discs when he recalled his bizarre fashion choice, telling Kirsty Young he’d always had adventurous tastes when it came to his style.

In the episode, which is set to air on BBC Radio 4 on Sunday, David said: “I had two options, just a normal suit or the option of burgundy, velvet knickerbockers with white tights and white ballet shoes, and I chose that, believe it or not.”

As host Kirsty chuckled, the father-of-four told her: “I felt great!”

“My dad looked at me as if to say, ‘Really, is that what you picked?’”

Kirsty then asked David if he’d ever worn the eye-catching outfit again, to which he replied: “I think I did!”

Laughing, Kirsty responded: “Not to football training, I hope!”

David is well known for his experimental fashion sense, most notably when he first started dating his wife, former Spice Girl Victoria, in 1997.

Their matching leather suits went down in the history books back in 1999, with David later saying of the look: “Me and Victoria always laugh about when we went to this Versace show and we had on matching leather outfits.

“Now we’re like, ‘What were we thinking?’”

He continued: “We were living at her mum’s house at the time and she was getting changed in her room – we weren’t allowed to stay in the same room – and I was getting changed in my room downstairs.

“Then we both came to the kitchen and we were like ‘Wow’.

“It was a lot of leather. We still have those outfits.”

The full episode of Desert Island Discs with David is set to air on January 29.

When the 41-year-old was announced as the castaway for the special edition of radio show, Kirsty said: “75 is a birthday worth celebrating and having David as my castaway seems like the perfect gift.

“His sporting legacy is of course extraordinary.

“And along with his charisma, cultural impact and humanitarian work, he is a modern man of many parts. He'll be a fascinating guest to welcome on to my little interview island!”
