Dermot O’Leary opens National Television Awards with surprise duet with Tom Jones – after crooner hogs the microphone
The X Factor presenter seems like he might want to become a contestant on next year's series after showing off his pipes in an opening number
DERMOT O’Leary and Tom Jones may be on rival talent shows, but they proved that it’s all about the music as they joined forces for the opening number of the National Television Awards.
The X Factor presenter and made sure the show kicked off in style, and performed with a live band for a rendition of jazz classic Got My Mojo Working by Muddy Waters.
Dermot is the first to arrive on stage and prepares to sing, but before he does Tom Jones cuts in front of him and steals the microphone from him.
Tom then takes the lead as Dermot is relegated to back-up singer – but he can’t help but bust out the last few notes to prove he has hidden talents as a singer.
From the sounds of it though, while he managed to sing in key, it doesn’t look likely he’ll make the move from presenter to contestant anytime soon.
Dermot took to the stage for the eighth year as the host of the NTAs this evening – and made sure it was one no one would forget.
Ahead of the night’s festivities, he warned The Sun’s Dan Wootton about the opening number and said “In a manner of speaking it’s happening.
“I go out, I’m about to start singing and Tom Jones comes out and does a number.
“I’m s******g myself.
“It sounds good now when you’re being nice to me, but I don’t know how it’ll sound when I’m stood next to one of the country’s greatest-ever singers.”
“I’m s******g myself.

He then added his boss Simon Cowell wasn’t so interested to hear his vocals, and said: “Simon’s tips are, ‘Why are you doing that? Don’t do it you’re just stupid… blah blah blah’.”
However, he also revealed the thing he would be looking forward to most at the event – watching Phil and Holly on This Morning the next day.
The daytime duo took to the sofa last year still drunk from the night before.
Speaking about the incident in an exclusive with The Sun’s Bizarre column, Dermot said: “These two are so naughty honestly. This one of the reasons why I wish I was at the NTAs rather than just hosting it—cause I’ve got to be a good boy on the night of the NTAs.
“You finish the show and you’re playing eight hour catch up on everyone. These two [pointing at Holly and Phil] with Ant and Dec and their respective partners, are the worst.
“She literally doesn’t go home. They are brilliant, love them for that. Actually one of the best thing about the NTAs is waking up the next day to see what state these two are in on This Morning. Look at Phillip! He looks dead to the world.”
