SHERLOCK’s fourth series reaches its dramatic climax on Sunday night.
The Sun was granted special access to a BFI preview screening of The Final Problem, in which Benedict Cumberbatch, 40, and Martin Freeman, 45, could be making their last ever appearances as the titular detective and his sidekick Dr John Watson.
The BBC drama has earned mixed reviews and disappointing ratings after its New Year’s Day comeback, almost three years after its last full series.
The drug-fuelled second-last episode last week, The Lying Detective, fell into the trap of style over substance, drawing its lowest ever overnight figures of 6.3 million.
But then came the shock reveal that Sherlock’s much-rumoured ‘third brother’ was actually a villainous sister which could bump up figures for potentially its final showing on Sunday.

CASE CLOSED
WHO OR WHAT IS SHERRINFORD? Last year bosses said three words were vital to series four: Thatcher, Smith and Sherrinford. The latter remains the only mystery. Mycroft’s connections to it will be uncovered.
IS MORIARTY ALIVE? Actor Andrew Scott, 40, appeared at the screening, sending fan theories into overdrive. Flashbacks have been seen throughout the series. This finale will detail whether it’s more than just twisted memories.
WHO REALLY IS EURUS? Suffice to say the backstory to Sherlock’s sister Eurus (played by Sian Brooke, 36) is a complicated one with many twists and turns. But the ‘East Wind’ won’t be a mystery for long.
WHY DIDN’T SHERLOCK RECOGNISE EURUS? The super sleuth is a top detective but can’t recognise flesh and blood? It’s a tricky one. But Mycroft fills in the gaps.
IS EURUS WORKING FOR MORIARTY? It’s been heavily hinted at that Sherlock’s sister and his foe are in cahoots. But is it too obvious? There’s many layers to this one.
IS JOHN WATSON DEAD? Eurus, posing as John’s psychiatrist, shot the doctor at the end of the second episode. Is he alive and kicking? The opening puts that one to bed early on.
UNSOLVED
WHERE IS IRENE ADLER? After texting Sherlock it seemed Irene’s (Lara Pulver, 36) return was imminent. The will-they-won’t-they lives on.
IS THIS THE END? Show bosses have been evasive about the future of the BBC series. Mark said there’s “willingness” to do more. Steven teased: “If this is the last time - we’re not planning it to be - but it might be. It’s possible and we could end it there.”
