Welcome to your 7-day film guide
Film of the week...
A Most Violent Year, Sunday, 10pm, BBC2
Set in New York during the winter of 1981 – the city’s most crime-ridden year – this atmospheric and gripping drama follows the lives of immigrant Abel Morales (Oscar Isaac, right) and his no-nonsense wife (Jessica Chastain, left) as he attempts to keep his small business afloat.
Costly loans, competition and the constant threat of his vans being hijacked make it hard for Abel to stay on the right side of the law.
The violence is mostly implied, which makes it even more tense.
Action Choice
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay: Part 1, Sunday, 9pm, C4
The games are over and a revolution is underway, but is our reluctant hero Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence, right) strong enough to lead the rebellion?
A fabulous cast includes the late Philip Seymour Hoffman.
Fantasy Choice
The Huntsman: Winter’s War, Friday, 8pm, Sky Cinema Premiere & Sky Cinema On Demand
Where Charlize Theron’s (right) Queen Ravenna was the star of the first film, this prequel goes back in time to reveal all about her sister Freya (Emily Blunt, left) and how, after a terrible heartbreak, the once kind-hearted girl became an ice maiden.
Entertaining and visually stunning.
Comedy Choice
Sex Tape, Saturday, 10pm, C5
While this super-awkward film might not have impressed the critics, it’s a fun and easy watch.
Ten years together and two kids later, the spark has gone from Jay (Jason Segel, right) and Annie’s (Cameron Diaz, left) marriage, so they make a sex tape. The tape becomes public and – well, you can guess the rest.
And on the big screen...
La La Land released Friday
This sweeping musical romance may be set in modern-day Los Angeles but it has all the old-school Hollywood charm of West Side Story or Singin’ In The Rain.
Emma Stone (left) and Ryan Gosling (right) turn in career-defining performances as a struggling actress and a jazz musician who fall in love.
A total triumph.
